The red ball indicates that the modem cannot establish or maintain communications with the Network Operations Center. This can be caused by anything from damaged equipment, improper setup, incorrect settings, or even somebody forgetting to pay the internet bill.

The System Status screen breaks down the requirements for functional connectivity into five sections. Click on the red ball to see this screen and see where the breakdown is happening. The error messages are not very helpful on this screen unless you already know a lot about the system. It's still very helpful to know which part of the system is giving an error.
